New guidelines for the environmental bonus in Germany

– Combined promotion and staggered leasing from November 16th, 2020

The federal government of Germany has set a national goal of promoting the sale of new and young used electric vehicles with the help of an environmental bonus. This can make a notable contribution in reducing air pollution while at the same time increase the demand for environmentally friendly electric vehicles. The measures will support the rapid spread of electrically powered vehicles on the market.

A new guideline for the environmental bonus was published on November 5th, 2020 and will become law almost two weeks later on November 16th, 2020. Significant innovations are tiered subsidy rates for leasing and the option of combining the environmental bonus with additional subsidies. The prerequisite for this is an administrative agreement between the respective funding agency and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).

From November 16th, the BAFA (Federal Office for Economics and Export Control) environmental bonus can be combined with the following funding programs:

· The funding guidelines for electromobility and market ramp up NIP2 of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI)

· The immediate program “Clean Air” and the fleet exchange program “Social and Mobile” of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU)

The aim is to expand the funding opportunities through further agreements. A continuously updated overview of the funding opportunities is provided on the BAFA website. To see more about this in explanatory tables on funding rates as well as bonuses, please read here:
